Tiny, Suicidal Drone/Missile Mashup Is Part of U.S.’ Afghanistan Arsenal - Wired

U.S. troops may be winding down their war in Afghanistan, but they’re now also operating one of the most bleeding-edge lethal drones available.
Afghanistan is the trial by fire of the Switchblade, AeroVironment’s much-hyped miniature mashup of drone and missile. Most killer drones are designed like aircraft and fire missiles at a target. The Switchblade is the missile.
Unveiled to much fanfare in 2011 — it even got its own weird Taiwanese animation — as of last fall, Army soldiers in Afghanistan had yet to use the six-pound Switchblade they paid some $10 million to procure. But the U.S.-NATO military command there says they’re loving what they’re seeing from it.

Deep Inside a DNS Amplification DDoS Attack

A few weeks ago I wrote about DNS Amplification Attacks. These attacks are some of the largest, as measured by the number of Gigabits per second (Gbps), that we see directed toward our network. For the last three weeks, one persistent attacker has been sending at least 20Gbps twenty-four hours a day as an attack against one of our customers.
That size of an attack is enough to cripple even a large web host. For CloudFlare, the nature of our network means that the attack, which gets diluted across all of ourglobal data centers, doesn't cause us harm. Even from a cost perspective, the attack doesn't end up adding to our bandwidth bill because of the way in which we're charged for wholesale bandwidth.
We buy a lot of bandwidth and we pay for the higher of our ingress (in-bound) or egress (out-bound) averaged over a month. Since we act as a caching proxy, under normal circumstances egress always exceeds ingress. When there's an attack, the two lines get closer together but rarely is an attack large enough to add to our overall bandwidth costs.

The Very High Speed Transit System - RAND [PDF]

Description of a very high speed transit (VHST) system operating in its own rarefied atmosphere in evacuated tubes in underground tunnels. Most cases considered took less time to go coast-to-coast (e.g., 21 min) than it takes an aircraft to climb to an efficient operating altitude. VHST's tubecraft ride on, and are driven by, electromagnetic (EM) waves. In accelerating, it employs the energy of the surrounding EM field; in decelerating, it returns most of this energy to the system. Tunnel systems would be shared by oil, water, and gas pipelines; channels for laser and microwave waveguides; electric power lines including superconducting ones; and freight systems. Environmental and economic benefits are substantial, and the technology for building and operating the system exists.

NSA Whistleblower Thomas Drake: All Doubts Dispelled, Bradley Manning’s a Whistleblower

National Security Agency whistleblower Thomas Drake reacts to Bradley Manning’s statement, which he read in court on February 28, “I’ve said for some time now that Bradley Manning is a whistleblower. I put myself in his shoes, but the question becomes, “What would you do?” He chose a path that was fraught with significant peril and he knew it. But he chose it anyway as an act of conscience and to get the word out. People argued things that became public both alleged and, even more recently in light of the statement, that …go get another avenues. Not his job to hold up the mirror. He did.”

The whistleblower, who exposed fraud, waste, abuse and illegality involving a warrantless wiretapping program at the NSA, finds what Manning did was an “extraordinarily brave and courageous act. And all that other stuff, all the personal, all the psycho-babble in terms of cause and what could have led to it, where his head was at, all that is just so much distraction.”

Cost to U.S. of Iraq, Afghanistan wars to exceed $4 trillion

A new study from Harvard University, calculating the cost to the United States of the wars in Iraq Afghanistan, has concluded that that cost will come to between $4 trillion to $6 trillion. This cost includes the spending on medical care for wounded soldiers and repairs to and replacement of military gear used in the two wars. The decision by the Bush administration to pay for the wars with borrowed money has increased their costs, the study says. In all, the two wars have added $2 trillion to the U.S.debt, accounting for about 20 percent of the debt incurred from 2001 to 2012.

High-Tech NYPD Unit Tracks Criminals Through Facebook and Instagram Photos - On the Inside - DNAinfo.com New York

NEW YORK CITY — Socializing online is landing criminals in custody.
Police are searching for suspects' photos on Instagram and Facebook, then running them through the NYPD’s new Facial Recognition Unit to put a face to a name, DNAinfo New York has learned.

Detectives are now breaking cases across the city thanks to the futuristic technology that marries mug shots of known criminals with pictures gleaned from social media, surveillance cameras and anywhere else cops can find images.
“It is the one time something you see on a television show is actually working in the real world,” said one top police official who went from a tech skeptic to a fan.

‘Monsanto Protection Act’ Sneaks Through Senate

When the Senate passed a budget resolution Wednesday that appears to prevent some of the potential damage from sequestration, the Continuing Resolution included several food- and agriculture-related earmarks.

But one inclusion in particular is especially controversial. The “biotech rider” would require the USDA to approve the harvest and sale of crops from genetically modified seed even if a court has ruled the environmental studies on the crop were inadequate. This aspect of the bill infuriated many sustainable food and agriculture groups, who nicknamed the bill the “Monsanto Protection Act.”

If signed into law by President Obama, here’s what the rider would do: It will allow farmers to plant, harvest and sell genetically engineered plants even if the crops have been ruled upon unfavorably in court. A Center for Food Safety statement called the rider “an unprecedented attack on U.S. judicial review of agency actions” and “ a major violation of the separation of powers.”

US plan calls for more scanning of private Web traffic, email

The U.S. government is expanding a cybersecurity program that scans Internet traffic headed into and out of defense contractors to include far more of the country's private, civilian-run infrastructure.

As a result, more private sector employees than ever before, including those at big banks, utilities and key transportation companies, will have their emails and Web surfing scanned as a precaution against cyber attacks.

Under last month's White House executive order on cybersecurity, the scans will be driven by classified information provided by U.S. intelligence agencies — including data from the National Security Agency (NSA) — on new or especially serious espionage threats and other hacking attempts. U.S. spy chiefs said on March 12 that cyber attacks have supplanted terrorism as the top threat to the country...

The Iran, Hezbollah, Venezuela Axis

Iran has illegally laundered billions of dollars through the Venezuelan financial sector and is currently stashing “hundreds of millions” of dollars in “virtually every Venezuelan bank today,” according to a former senior State Department official.
“It’s a huge blind spot in those trying to implement sanctions” on Iran, Roger Noriega, a former United States ambassador and assistant secretary of state for western hemisphere affairs, told the Washington Free Beacon.
Venezuela served as Iran’s closest Western ally under the late President Hugo Chavez, who allowed the rogue regime to establish a military and financial presence at the highest levels of the Venezuelan government.

Former TSA chief backs 'knife' decision; suggests axes and machetes, too - CNN.com

Washington (CNN) -- The former head of transportation security said Wednesday he supports a new policy allowing small knives on planes, but said it does not go far enough, and should include instruments such as "battle axes (and) machetes."

Sharp objects can no longer bring down aircraft, former Transportation Security Administration chief Kip Hawley told CNN, and the search for knives interferes with the search for objects that can harm aircraft.

Holder does not rule out drone strike scenario in U.S. - CNN.com

Washington (CNN) -- Attorney General Eric Holder is not entirely ruling out a scenario under which a drone strike would be ordered against Americans on U.S. soil, but says it has never been done previously and he could only see it being considered in an extraordinary circumstance.

His comments released on Tuesday were prompted by questions raised over the nomination of John Brennan to head the CIA. Specifically, members of the Senate Intelligence Committee sought the Obama administration's legal rationale for its use of drones to kill terror suspects overseas.

But Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican who has said he would do what he could to hold up Brennan's nomination until he got a full answer to his query, wanted to know whether the administration considered that policy applicable domestically.

Why did WTC7 collapse? - Truthloader LIVE with Dr. Niels Harrit & Alien Scientist - YouTube

World Trade Center 7 was a 47 storey building which collapsed at 5:20PM, hours after both World Trade Centre 1 and World Trade Centre 2 collapsed. It was not hit by a plane, but it did have fires burning on a number of floors.

Its collapse has caused a huge amount of controversy, especially online, where the tower's collapse is consistently brought up as a point of contention with comments such as "Investigate WTC7" appearing with incredible regularity.

There are two competing theories on why World Trade Center 7 collapsed, one is the NIST report from 2008 which argues the building collapsed due to fire weakening the structure of the building. Another theory is that incendiaries were used to destroy the structural strength of the building, and this theory comes from Architects and Engineers for 9/11 truth.

Why is this such an important issue for people? Because the latter theory implies that we haven't been told the whole truth about who was behind the attacks of September 11th, and that, if true, is kind of a big deal.

We were joined by Dr. Niels Harrit - one of the leading experts on scientific evidence of 9/11 & YouTube vlogger Alien Scientist (http://www.youtube.com/AlienScientist)
